General FAQs

Here are few of the questions we are most frequently asked. If you have further questions, please don't hesitate to reach out through our contact form!

Is there a dress code for BOLD ACTS events?

With the nature of the events, this dress code helps to make sure that clothing is functional.  Please don't bring your favorite clothing (it WILL get dirty), but also please don't bring thread-bare clothing as the woods can cause snags in clothing easily. Please also leave at home favorite or sentimental jewelry, so there's no chance of it getting lost or broken.

Ladies:

  • We require that pants and shorts have no holes above the knee, not be tight, and not be worn low. To check for tightness, pinch the sides of your pants and make sure there’s some wiggle room. Leggings, yoga pants, and skinny jeans are not allowed at these outdoor events.

  • To check shorts length, make an L with thumb and index finger and place at the top of knee when seated, shorts should be long enough to hit the thumb.

  • Shirts should not be low-cut, tight, or revealing any midriff or cleavage. They need to be long enough to tuck in, or you need to have a camisole or tank top underneath to tuck in- some obstacles and activities will require this. T-shirts should be plain or have appropriate content on them. Shirts also must have sleeves.

Gentlemen:

  • We require pants and shorts have no holes above the knee, not be tight, and not be worn low. To check for tightness, pinch the sides of your pants and make sure there’s some wiggle room.  Skinny jeans and tight joggers are not allowed at these events.

  • Shirts should not have holes.  They should be plain or have appropriate content on them. Shirts should be loose-fitting, long enough to tuck in and have sleeves.

Is there a Device Policy for BOLD ACTS events?

The Unplugged Policy is relevant for Survival and ASAP

Students will adhere to a device-free policy during the week of Survival and/or ASAP. Additionally, students will need to refrain from talking about media throughout the event.  Our purpose is to be in the wilderness and media distracts from that.  Upon arrival at camp, students will turn in phones, iPods, tablets or any other media devices that they have with them to Survival staff. They will receive them back upon leaving camp.  During the week, students are encouraged to call home and can do so using staff or parent cell phones. Parents can reach their students by calling Jenna or Curtis Whatley at any time.

Please note: we encourage students to travel with their cell phones to and from the event.

Yes, parents are encouraged to keep their phones on them!

PREPARE FOR WEATHER:

The weather will likely be cold at night so please come prepared with a warm sleeping bag and lots of layers of clothing. Even if you're used to the cooler temperatures, you'll be sleeping on the ground in a shelter and it will be extra cold so please come prepared.  Please also pack extra socks so that you can make sure you have dry socks at night.

WHAT TO PACK:

You're welcome to pack in a suitcase for this event.  No hiking backpacks are necessary, though you will need a backpack to carry around for the week like we do at Survival.  Also, things that really need to stay dry (i.e. socks, camera, etc.) should be placed in zip lock bags.  We will do our best to help keep everything dry during the week but this will guarantee that those items stay dry.

Is there a packing list for Explorer students?

Yes! Please bring a water bottle for each person and shoes that are appropriate for hiking around in the woods.  If the location is cooler weather, please wear long pants.  If you choose to wear shorts, please wear long shorts.  Also, no sleeveless shirts please.

Do I need hiking boots?

Hiking boots would be nice if you have them but are not necessary if you don’t already have them. Something you’ve already broken in would be best to avoid blisters. Tennis shoes work great too!

Can parents come to the event? If so, how do parents participate?

Yes! We love for parents to come with their students to experience and get to see the challenges and things that their students go through and learn.  We encourage the parents to be involved if they would like by helping with some of the activities, being an extra pair of safety eyes, cooking over the fire with the "parent team", and helping with some of the training experiences.

What if my student has food sensitivities or allergies?

We can accommodate for allergies or sensitivities.  Just make sure to let us know and we will have staff contact you directly for more information.

Does my student need to be an avid outdoors person and/or really enjoy camping in order to participate?

No.  Your student doesn't need to have any outdoor experience to come and have a fantastic week.  Even if your student doesn't enjoy camping, they are sure to enjoy this week!  Some of our locations are in cabins and some are in tents, however the tents are large canvas tents that you can stand up inside.  This is a camping experience unlike anything else.  The fellowship and experiences that the students encounter during the week bring them closer to God and make them a tight knit community. This bond of this fellowship and spiritual growth outweighs the challenges of being in the outdoors.

My student has a lot of outdoor survival experience, is this program too basic for them?

Survival is not a basic program.  The majority of Eagle Scouts that have come to Survival have said that it has challenged them, helped them to grow in their skills as well as their relationship with Christ and teamwork and leadership abilities.  Our events teach Survival material and then have the students utilize these skills in team challenges and simulated survival scenarios.

Will my student be chaperoned and monitored during the week?

Yes! We have either Survival staff, directors or parents with the students at all times

Can my student bring their own food/personal snacks for the event?

You are welcome to bring some snacks to share.  Please don't bring a ton of food as the food part is part of the program.  We will make sure there is always enough to fill you and have snack type food available also in between meals.

Does BOLD ACTS perform background checks?

Yes.  We perform background checks on any person 18 and older who attends or visits the Survival camp.
